Belize Film Commissioner Works With Angela Simmons

There's a bright young star in the making and she goes by the name of Angela Simmons, yes folks, Reverend Run's Daughter. I had the distinct pleasure of working with this young lady on the filming of a TV Pilot. I was quite impressed with her professionalism and her acting ability. She may come from The Royal Family of Rap, but she has quite a future in front of the camera as well. Look out Belize, rumor has it that the show may just have an episode that takes place in Belize. Who knows we may be seeing Angela & Vanessa down here in the country real soon.

BELIZE 10th Of September Celebration! Where Does The Music Come From?

Tucked into the Caribbean coast of Central America between Mexico's southern Yucatan region and Guatemala, Belize (formerly British Honduras) gained independence from Great Britain in 1981. Shortly after British forces wrested Jamaica from Spanish control in 1655, a motley array of English entrepreneurs and pirates began to settle Belize, drawn by the economic potential of the region's dyewoods and mahogany timber stands. In an otherwise Spanish-speaking Central America, Belize quickly became an ethnically diverse settlement, home to Creoles (of mixed African, European and Central American descent), African-Amerindian Garifuna, Mestizos (of mixed Mayan, Mexican and Central American heritage) and several lowland Maya groups.

Almost nothing is known of the colony's early musical history, but enslaved Africans certainly brought their expressive traditions to the logging camps set up in the interior beginning in the 1720s. The first written accounts of African drumming date to the early 19th century, as white English residents complained of gatherings in the outskirts of the capital, where slaves and freedmen congregated to dance, drum and sing through the night. Fearing that the drums served to communicate plans for slave uprisings (a recurrent feature of pre-emancipation Belize), colonial authorities unsuccessfully outlawed the activity, which spilled over into the annual Christmas revelry when slaves returned to Belize City from their logging tasks.

Oral tradition assigns the origins of brukdown and boom-and-chime music to the Belize timber camps. The music combines ribald Creole-language vocals, accordion, guitar and hand percussion in a sonic blend recalling Jamaican mento and early Louisiana zydeco. Likewise, Garifuna residents who had never been enslaved sustained their singing, drumming and dancing traditions. In the early 1980s, punta rock, a creation commonly attributed to Belizean Garifuna musician, composer and painter Delvin "Pen" Cayaetano, added the amplified guitar to the Garifuna rhythm ensemble. Today, Belizeans see punta rock's popularity throughout Central America as a positive reflection of the nation's unique identity in the region.

British police orchestras and bands, reinforced by elite classical-music education, introduced brass, woodwinds and piano to Belize. The police ensembles also incorporated accordion, guitar and banjo, the latter showing patent West African roots. Maya and Mestizo string-band music combines European guitar and violin with indigenous harps, whistles, shakers and frame-drum percussion, together with the marimba, which traces its genesis to the West African balafon. Maya musicians still fashion their own marimbas and harps from Belizean hardwoods, stringing the latter with thick nylon fishing line. Typically played on religious holidays and at community festivals, exclusively by men, as in Guatemala and southern Mexico, Belizean Maya music is unadorned, but it possesses a certain hypnotic quality reflected in the subdued mixed dancing it often accompanies.

Notable Garifuna artists include Junie Aranda, Jursino Cayetano, Pen Cayetano, Lugua Centeno, Mohobub Flores, Dale Guzman, Adrian Martínez, Paul Nabor, Andy Palacio and Gabaga Williams. Creole artists include Brad Pattico, Wilfred Peters and Leroy Young "The Grandmaster" (the country's dub-poet laureate). The only recorded indigenous musician is Kekchi Maya harpist Florencio Mess.

Maya Air September Celebration Specials, See The Belize River From The Air

The Belize River, what a glorious site to see, the main vein that runs through the country of Belize. The life line to early settlers of our beautiful jewel. My father in law would to tell me stories of the river and how they would travel for days to make it from St. Paul to Belize City. During the month of September Maya Air had a special to San Pedro and Dangriga from Belize City for $39.00 Belizean Dollars, that's $19.50 to those from the USA. For $19.50 you could see one of the most breathtaking rivers of the Western Hemisphere from an aerial view. Life is funny sometimes, the special rate is for the arrival to your destination. As in life, you should enjoy the journey because if you're not careful you may miss the best part of the trip. Film Belize people and enjoy the unspoiled beauty.

"Portals to the Underworld."

Aug. 9th, 2010

The BELIZE FILM COMMISSION and NICH are excited to announce the premiere of GATES OF HELL on the History Channel, Tuesday, August 17, at 8 pm.

According to Courtney Engelstein, Development Producer of Red Marble Media, “ The show looks fantastic, and the segment in Belize is beautiful, compelling, and creepy. Thank you so much for your help in pulling that shoot together. History Channel has just begun airing promos, which we are very happy with as well.”

Red Marble Media filmed in Belize earlier this year for a commissioned two-hour History Channel special originally called "Portals to the Underworld." The documentary charts historical thoughts and beliefs about the afterlife from the ancient Maya to modern Christianity. Producers traveled to places that were once believed to be sacred portals to spiritual realms of which Belize was one and used interviews with experts and artistic depictions of the Underworld from throughout the ages for the project.

Belize's Lady Di

As the President of NICH, Ms. Diane Haylock has many responsibilities, she oversees numerous departments within the the body of NICH, which stands for the National Institution of Culture & History. This governmental institution has the enormous task of documenting and preserving the culture of Belize. She also has the role of creating the environment for our budding film industry to grow in Belize. That is were our paths cross, over the past 2 years as Belize's Film Commissioner I have had the opportunity to work with Ms. Haylock in bringing awareness of the film industry opportunities to our local Belizeans. I have partnered with some local businessmen and Investors from abroad to assist in building an industry that we could all be proud of. The road has been tough at times but with the support of The Belize Government, Ms. Haylock and the her staff we have made some pretty significant strides. We are now at the crossroads of our 5 year plan and we are very close to locking down our first multi-million dollar project. I wanted to put this blog out there because far too many times we get credit for things that we do and we don't share the credit for what was achieved. In life I've learned that anything that is truly successful has a team element that played a major role in getting it done. I'd like to personally say thank you for your support Ms. Haylock and that the film industry in Belize is truly benefiting from your conscious efforts to see this thing all the way through. The Belize International Film Festival 2010 says thank you as well.

Opening Night At The BIFF 2010

Daryl Chill Mitchell was the man of the hour at the opening night for the Belize International Film Festival. Chill spoke about his desire to see how he could help young Belizean Artist realize their dreams. Daryl spoke to an audience of young, eager and talented film makers about his experience in the industry and how they could have a huge impact on the international film world by telling the Belizean Story. He was very candid about the challenges that they would face, but he told them that they should never give up because they have a unique story that only they can tell. The audience was very appreciative of his words of encouragement and took what he said to heart. Chill has been a friend to the people of Belize and has help out over the years with promoting the country, we would like to acknowledge his kindness and hard work and let him know that Belize considers him one of their own. Thanks to all that supported the festival and we look forward to seeing you guys July 15th - July 23rd 2011.

The Belizean International Film Festival

The BIFF has just completed it's 5th Annual Festival, the 10 day event celebrated the budding Belizean Film Industry. We were blessed to have incredible guest speakers at our opening night and throughout the week at our workshops. The attendees had a chance to mingle and interact with industry professionals from abroad as well as the local Belizean talent. The message that was most profound throughout the festival was that Belize has many worthwhile stories to tell and that our artist should be the ones telling the story. The phrase Belizean Voice was most commonly used when it came down to describing our efforts on how we should
expose Belize to the world. The most amazing thing is that everyone spoke about the voice of the Belizean people and the many wonderful unique stories we could tell. I left the festival with a sense of purpose for our industry and how it could be the foundation of a powerful movement in the resurgence of the Kriol people and it's culture. Who Say Belize No Got No Culture?

Belize Is The Place To Be If You Are Talking Beautiful Location

The definition as stated on Yahoo of Natural Beauty is " a place that needs no enhancements. It's a quality of a location that gives intense pleasure and deep satisfaction". Those two sentences best describe the reason to come to Belize to shoot your next movie, commercial, print shoot or web film. Belize has become a self contained film location. It's locations vary from Mayan ruins, the best underwater photography in the Western Hemisphere, and beautiful tropical forests and includes friendly knowledgeable crews who are willing to work hard for a days wage. Belize has an extremely friendly government that will go out of its way to make your shoot enjoyable, efficient and highly productive.

You have many location choices available to you as a film maker in the world today. The Film Commissioner of Belize is acutely aware of that and is working very hard to create tax incentives for film makers and build up it's local film business so that Belize can compete with anyplace in the world for filming.

Give us a shot, for your next shoot. You will not be disappointed.

The Martini Shot on Caye Caulker, this was an amazing day, being a part of a production really brings everyone together. We shot this day with a skeleton crew and everybody had to do double duty since we were a bit short handed. In future episodes we plan on showing you the best that country has to offer, I truly believe that Belizean cuisine is one par with any food from around the world. The fact that you can enjoy it while looking at a sunrise or a sunset like the one we are watching from the roof of bar at "The Split" just reconfirms that Belize is truly a magical place. The Greening Of The Belize Film Commission

Belize Film Commission is on the verge of going green. As Film Commissioner of Belize I travel all over the country to find the perfect location. Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day with Ms. Simon at her nursery at mile 43 1/2 on the Western Highway. During my visit I found a wonderful way for us to promote the country and the Belize Film Commission. We're going to share our natural resources with the rest of the world. This nursery is the perfect location for filming and the artwork that Ms. Simon makes from the trees, termite nest, and coconut shells are perfect little gifts for our guest to take back with them. It's amazing how nothing on the property goes to waste every thing has a dual function.

Sinbad The Sailor Visits Belize

They're Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Representative from Asylum Pictures touched down in Belize to start pre production on a feature film in the beautiful Jewel. Please follow along with us as Belizeans get a chance to see behind the scenes of the process of movie making.
We will follow the day to day of the production as it makes it's way through filming. We will see the good, the bad and the ugly of their experience. Location Scouting: Before our crew got into town we did a little bit of scouting so we would have some specific spots to show them. Location scouting Belizean style can be fun, during our first few days we stopped off at various islands and enjoyed some lobsters from the sweet Caribbean Sea. First Meal: Nerie's Restaurant Queen Street, Belize City. The beer was cold (Belikin) the food was hot and the company was awesome. Jeff has taught me some of the new tricks on Final Cut Pro, and we got a chance to really capture the beauty of Altun Ha and the surrounding area. We plan on getting some jungle footage from Maskall Village and the 9 villages of The Baboon Sanctuary. I got a chance to show him the magic of the little Sony HD Camera, HDR-XR520 our new best friend. He in returned helped me to better understand our Sony EX3.

Well we finally got out of the production office and into the jungle to get some more B Roll footage for our TV show "A Taste of Belize" and some glamor footage for The Belize Film Commission website. We started the day traveling through the 9 villages of The Baboon Sanctuary and stopped to see a troupe of Howler Monkeys in the village of Flowers Bank. Flowers Bank is sleepy little village, which is in the heart of the Belize River Valley. We arrived early Monday morning anticipating to hear the welcome music of the Howler Monkeys, to our surprise there was no music and I was starting to get nervous. Our guide Ruben quickly told us that because of the cold weather the baboons weren't very active but that they would crank up the sound up by mid day. I got a little impatient because we were on a very tight schedule so we ventured deeper into the jungle and that's when we got in trouble, because of the rainy weather the ground was a little soft and we got stuck. Thanks to Jeff and our guide Ruben we were freed in about 30 minutes.

Altun Ha, Maya Ruin

Water Of The Rock, oh how I love the mystical beauty of the ruins at Altun Ha. I have always wanted to use this spot as a location for a movie, hopefully my dream will come through. The power that exist in knowing that there was a specific culture of people here in Belize hundreds of years before us that were so advanced that what they achieved as a group of people withstood the test of time and now we have the privilege of seeing how they lived. Belize is truly a wonderful & magical place. Film Belize and enjoy life.

Belizean Pineapple "Taste Of Belize

Here is another perk to filming in Belize, the hospitality is amazing. Producer, Jeff Pogue of Media Oblingata Productions enjoys some sweet fresh fruit along with the awesome scenery of the Belizean countryside. During Jeff's visit, he was quoted as saying "Belize has the best that nature has to offer". I like to think that we can supply you with the canvas for you to create your masterpiece, as film commissioner of Belize it's my duty to make sure that everyone's filming experience is a positive one. So go ahead Jeff and enjoy that delicious Belizean Pineapple there's plenty more where that came from.

The Crew Enjoys, The Beauty Of Belize

The

The Split on Caye Caulker is a special place, it's the local hot spot on the island. The split allows locals and tourist to interact on the island in a laid back comfortable atmosphere. The cast and crew really enjoyed the island and at the end of the day we all took a breather and enjoyed the view from the top of the Split Bar & Grill.

Chef Keith Jones "Taste Of Belize"

Chef Keith Jones, the host of "Taste Of Belize" shares his culinary experiences with us as he travels through the country of Belize. On this particular day of shooting we catch up with our host as he prepares to embark on a magical journey with Local Tour Guide Ras Creek and Belize's Local Sports legend Clinton "Pulu" Lightburn. This particular tour will take you around the island of Caye Caulker and through the beautiful waters of the Caribbean Sea. We will see Chef Jones interact with a friendly Sting Ray as he take his first dip in the warm healing waters of Belize. The Cayes are a series of islands off the coast of Belize that are protected by our Barrier Reef. The beauty of Belize and the series of islands that run the coast line is that they are close to the mainland in distance, but miles away in the ambiance that each Caye creates. Every single Caye has a personality and a lifestyle of it's own so you can island hop for the whole day and really get a different Taste of Belize in a short period of time. Travel safely and we hope you enjoy the video. Taste of Belize will be aired on Colours TV during Winter 2010. Colours TV is a Denver based, multi-cultural networked, which is carried on Dish Satellite with a viewing market of about 19 million households.

Ras Creek On A Taste Of Belize

The behind the scene footage from the show was amazing, as we started to edit the hours of footage we found a few gems that we will be sharing. This footage of Ras Creek is pretty good and it gives you a real good feel of what people will experience once they visit Caye Caulker. We plan on going back to capture more of the island and to visit a local hang out called "The Split" and a restaurant called "The WishWilly".

Welcome To Caye Caulker

Ras Creek, the original Rasta was quite entertaining and informative during the tour of Shark & Ray Reserve. Caye Caulker is a beautiful island with a charm and personality of it's own. It seems to be a favorite for filming, we are getting a lot of questions about the island and one of it's most popular inhabitants, Ras Creek. The island reminds me of Venice Beach, California with all the eclectic personalities and interesting architectural structures. The Island is going through a wonderful stage of development with the northern part of the island becoming an attractive option to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The southern part of Caye Caulker which is more developed is very popular with the locals as well as the younger tourist. This island will give you the best of both worlds when all development is completed, something for your high end tourist and something for the bargain hunters. At the end of the day Belize has something for everyone. I have to tell you that our crew really enjoyed our time on Caye Caulker and I look forward to doing many more projects there, some of the crew members took a break and talked about the island and the experiences they had. Two of our crew members were a part of the Belize Film Commission trainee program so this was really special for them to be a part. I was really impressed with how they worked and followed directions from our lead cameraman Steve Roberts, and the professionalism and pride that they carried to the workplace because they were doing something that represented Belize. I hope everyone that sees our show "A Taste Of Belize" really enjoys it, and I hope that in 2010 more local Belizeans learn to really enjoy Belize.
